Review: ON A WET DAY
It was cold, wet and windy, but Garry Jones couldn't have cared less. Competing in his first Shootout, the Woolooware member had it all under control, playing steady golf when it mattered to beat Bob McMurtry to win the 2002 NSW Shootout Championship. A field approaching 100 players braved the uncomfortable conditions at the Camden Lakeside course west of Sydney to decide the third NSW Shootout Champion. It was in fact the first Shootout in which rain has fallen. In the end it was Jones, needing only a 5/2 on the 18th hole, after his opponent McMurtry hit his tee shot into the water at the difficult par four finishing hole. Cronulla's Matt Howlin and Shootout regular Kelvin Choo were eliminated on the 17th hole, the second last Shootout hole. In a testimony to what Shootout golf events are all about, Cronulla junior Ben Parkes, the stableford winner on the day, recorded 45 points in a spectacular performance. When the draw of holes come out of the hat, however, he totaled just 12, one short of forcing his way into a putt-off for the final spot in the 8-man Shootout. Ten players on 13 points were forced to putt-off for the final spot in the Shootout.
For his efforts Jones won a framed Greg Norman at St Andrews print, which will be autographed by the Sharks when he is next in town. He also received an all-expenses paid trip to the Australian Shootout National Final to be played on the Gold Coast from October 9.
Defending NSW Shootout Champion, Rugby League referee Bill Harrigan, was forced to withdraw during his title defense due to a rib injury sustained while controlling the first State of Origin game just two days prior.

Review: NEW BRIGHTON GOLF CLUB
Sometimes the pressure and excitement of a Shootout golf championship, brings out the best in the competitors. Remember back to Mark De Montfort's holed seven-iron to win, Bill Harrigan's 10-metre putt to take the NSW Shootout title and the classic battle between Jamie Arnold and Ewen Porter at Cronulla last year.
But on other occasions, under the pressure of it all, the people watching and following every shot, the expectation of winning, can bring the steadiest of golfer unstuck.
At the New Brighton Shootout, while it took some good play by Darryl Whiteman and Franco Cortazzo to reach the last two, the rest they might like to forget. At their first attempt at the par four 18th hole, both had opportunities to win, both squandered them, halving the hole with 6-net-5. Back down the fairway they went, to around 120-metres, to have another go at deciding the championship.
Darryl looked like winning but let his opponent back in, Franco had a chance but three-putted from short range, and Whiteman, a 19-handicap lefty from Cronulla fell over the line to become the 2002 New Brighton Shootout champ.
The stumbling finish was in contrast to the play by all qualifiers on the two par-three shootout holes. At the 13th, five of the eight hit the green in regulation, with five players making three pointers on the hole. At the 17th, three of the four hit the green on the difficult hole with their tee shots, only to three-putt. Eventual winner, Whiteman, the only one to miss the green, holed a curling downhill five-metre putt for a three, then watched in amazement as his rivals had their problems on the putting surface. Cortazzo survived a putt-off with Michael Hastie and Alan Ghassi to make it to the final hole.
Over 80-starters, on a sunny autumn day, enjoyed what was a successful running of the second New Brighton shootout.
