Review: OUTLASTING THE COMPETITION
In strong winds and with darkness approaching, Port Kembla's David Medcalf outlasted his competitors to win the Australian Shootout Golf Championship for the second year in a row.
Medcalf, a six-handicapper, defeated Brisbane club-professional Gary Burmeister in blustery conditions at Lakelands Golf course, after Burmeister had missed a one-metre putt for the title. His miss enabled Medcalf to sneak into a putt-off, which he ultimately won.
Again proving his ability under the pressure of Shootout golf events, Medcalf calmly stroked a 20-metre putt to within a foot of the hole to ensure his is still the only name engraved on the Australian Shootout Championship trophy.
In the 2000 national championship, Medcalf showed his mettle by winning a putt-off to capture the inaugural Shootout Championship. Included amongst the vanquished was star Gold Coast professional Scott Gardiner.
The Australian Shootout Championships, which are played as a handicap golf event for players of all levels, was held over three different venues on Queenslands' Gold Coast. The eventual winner must survive a series of play-off holes in order to emerge as the champion.
During the week of the national Shootout championships competitors played at The Glades, Royal Pines and Lakelands, with the victors of the daily shootout events qualifying for the Australian championship playoff. Medcalf was successful in winning the Royal Pines Shootout.
Winners of other individual events included Deirdre Melville of The Lakes who won at Lakelands, Burmeister, at The Glades, and Sue Dean of the Virginia club near Brisbane who won a ladies only Shootout also at The Glades.
A ladies Australian Shootout Championship was contested for the first time, pitting the best-performed women players on the week.
Deirdre Melville, Ruth Binns of Roseville in Sydney, the runner-up at Royal Pines, and Cathy Parkes, third at both Royal Pines and at The Glades, (replacing Sue Dean who couldn't play the final round), also battled the blustery conditions at Lakelands.
It was Parkes, a 14-handicapper from the Cronulla golf club who prevailed, taking out the first Australian Ladies Shootout Championship.
Cronulla's Beryl McLean, despite not featuring in a Shootout championship play-off, nonetheless had an interesting few days on the Gold Coast.
Searching for a wayward shot at the Lakelands on the third day, McLean had the misfortune to be bitten by a snake. Feeling a little off-colour and with club representatives not knowing the identity of the snake, nor wanting to take any risks, she was quickly transported to a nearby hospital where she remained under observation for over three hours.
After getting the all-clear, the 21-handicapper who has been a member of the Cronulla Golf club for 35 years, decided to back up the next day for a game at The Glades course for the 4BBB Shootout Championships.
Nearing the completion of an otherwise uneventful round, McLean was heard for miles letting out a cry not dissimilar to that of the previous day. This time however, it was for a totally different reason. Using a five-wood, McLean had the first hole-in-one of her golfing career, acing the 117m par-three 13th hole.
Reg Gendron, who has played in all but one Shootout golf championship in the two-year history of the event, partnered Lindsay Almond to victory in the first-ever 4BBB Shootout.
In the two-hole play-off the pair defeated Bob Westbury and Rob Willis at The Glades when Gendron made a solid par which equated to a net birdie.

Review: EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
Kogarah member Glen Hagarty wasn't sure what to expect from his first experience in a Shootout Golf event. When his numbers came out in the secret six draw it was still somewhat of a mystery.
But after playing some solid golf under pressure, including a tricky up and down on the second to last hole to stay alive, Hagarty stood over a two-metre putt on Kogarah's 18th green with an opportunity to become a Shootout Champion.
The rest is history. The 15-handicap local member calmly stroked his putt into the hole to withstand the challenge of New Brighton member Jamie Hurst and capture the Sydney City Shootout championship.
Hurst had kept his hopes alive with a spectacular chip shot from behind the 18th green to within a couple of feet of the hole, forcing his opponent to make his putt for the victory.
In a record for Shootout events, 16 points were needed to qualify for the 8-man shootout, Cronulla's Brad Cook among the participants. It would be an understatement to reveal that Cook was pleased when hole number 18 was drawn from the hat. Earlier in the day Cook holed his second shot on the difficult par four to take five points from the hole, no doubt helping him into the Shootout section of the event. Unfortunately his luck ran out when he was eliminated on the second hole of the shootout.
On a good day for scoring, on a well-conditioned Kogarah course, Kalvin Choo took out the stableford section with 44 points from his 15 handicap. Second was Kogarah 4-marker Steve Puskaric who came out on top of a five-way countback on 40 points.
Moore Park teaching professional Max Forrest shot the round of the day, a five under par score of 67, 39 points on his shootout handicap of plus-2.

2001 NEW BRIGHTON Shootout Championships

Course: New Brighton Golf Club
Review: DE MONTFORT RIDES HIS LUCK TO SPECTACULAR SHOOTOUT VICTORY
The unique format of a Shootout golf event lends itself to exciting finishes. But the finale at the New Brighton Shootout outdid anything that had come before.
Around 130 metres from the hole, with his opponent in a good position, former Golden Slipper winning jockey Mark De Montfort had it all to do. But his sweetly struck seven-iron was always on line, landed softly on the 18th green at the New Brighton course, then rolled gently into the hole for an eagle two, giving De Montfort a spectacular victory.
The unlucky "loser" was Rod Barnes of Cronulla golf club, his own seven-iron shot finishing within 4 metres of the hole, must have thought the title was his. If nothing else he can take some consolation in being a part of the most amazing and spectacular end to a Shootout in the short history of shootout golf championships.
In fact De Montfort was somewhat fortunate to even make it to the last Shootout hole. The six-handicapper needed a two-metre putt to stay alive on the second hole of the four-hole shootout. He again looked in trouble after missing the green left at the next, New Brighton's par three 17th, but after almost chipping-in his tap-in par enabled him to progress to the 18th hole and the fireworks which were to follow.
"We've seen some spectacular happenings in previous shootouts, long putts, very good shots, pretty ordinary ones, but nothing to top this," said Chris Parkes, founder and organiser of Shootout Golf Championships. "And with the championship on the line it was an amazing shot and an unbelievable finish."
De Montfort, who won the 1999 Golden Slipper on Catbird, hurried to the New Brighton course after riding in barrier trials at the nearby Warwick Farm racecourse earlier in the day. He has only recently returned to both racing and golf after a serious race fall. De Montfort's golf seems to have hardly suffered from the layoff, shooting three over par off the stick for 39 points, before later becoming the New Brighton Shootout champion.
Carlie Butler, who is gaining plenty of notoriety for her impressive golf and good looks, was another to contest the New Brighton Shootout. While winning the best ladies stableford score, she failed to qualify for the 8-player shootout.
Denis Roast, a strong supporter of Shootout golf events captured the prize for the best stableford score, edging out local member John Liestins after a countback on 40 points.
To reach the Shootout section of the day, 8 players contested a putt-off on 13 points with only one progressing. It was New Brighton pennant player John McFarlane who managed to stoke his 30-metre putt closest to the hole. Highest scorer after the secret six draw was eventual shootout runner-up Barnes with 16 points.

2001 CRONULLA Shootout Championships

Date: July 6, 2001
Course: Cronulla Golf Club
Review: THE CREAM RISES TO THE TOP
Ewen Porter has taken all before him in amateur golf over the last year or so. NSW junior titles, the NSW medal winner, numerous vardon trophy victories. But despite coming close in Shootout events of the past, the young Cronulla member had yet to outlast the opposition and emerge as a Shootout Champion.
In a thrilling battle with defending Cronulla Shootout champ Jamie Arnold, Porter managed to wipe the slate clean, claiming victory with a par three on the first extra hole of the Shootout.
In the final wash-up however, it may have been Arnold who was a little unlucky not to repeat his win of a year previous. His scores of 4-5-3-3, before his last hole bogey 4, displayed solid golf under the spotlight of the Shootout format. Porter, who shot a 2-under par round of 68 to help get him into the final eight, bogeyed the first Shootout hole, Cronulla's 15th, only surviving to fight another day after a putt-off with Ken Lamb and Denis Roast.
A popular finalist and the only female qualifier was Cathy Parkes, who snuck into the Shootout by virtue of a nine players for five spots putt-off. The Cronulla 16-handicapper then went on to be one of the final four competitors. Parkes was finally eliminated on the third playoff hole, Cronulla's par four eighth, after her two rivals made impressive birdie's. Also slipping out on contention on the eighth was Scott Arnold, younger brother of Jamie and son of resident pro Colin, after his par four wasn't good enough to advance.
Leading stableford scores, on a difficult day for scoring, were two scratch markers who managed 38 points. Max Forrest, a teaching professional at Moore Park, won the major prize on a countback from state team captain Warick Dews. The ladies winner with 33 points was Cathy Parkes.
It took 13 points in the random draw to qualify for the Shootout, with current NSW Shootout champion, rugby league referee Bill Harrigan, among the qualifiers. Harrigan was eliminated on the second Shootout hole along with Dunheved junior Craig Hadley.

Review: LEAGUE REF RULES THE FAIRWAYS
Despite scoring only 26 points on the day and making an ugly double bogey on the first shootout hole, leading referee Bill Harrigan prevailed to become the 2001 NSW Shootout Champion.
Harrigan qualified for the shootout in a putt-off, survived the first hole after another putt-off, then played some solid golf off his 22 handicap to beat Cronulla member Jim Payne in a thrilling finish on the 18th green at Camden Lakeside.
With his opponent less than 2 metres from the hole, Harrigan holed his seven-metre putt for a net birdie, only to watch his opponent miss his chance at forcing a sudden death putt-off.
"I've refereed in front of 107,000 at Stadium Australia but I was more nervous playing golf in front of forty or fifty," Harrigan admitted at the presentation of trophies.
Tournament organiser Chris Parkes was a hard luck story, failing to qualify for the Shootout despite scoring 40 points on the day. Cronulla golf club manager Greg Pearce led the qualifiers with 16 points from the six hole random draw. Eventual winner Harrigan scraped in as one of the 8 qualifiers after a putt-off was needed on 13 points.

Review: DONOVAN'S SHIP COMES IN
Local Port Kembla member Ron Donovan beat nerves and a persistent opponent to take out the 2001 Illawarra Shootout Championship.
After watching a two-metre putt to win the Shootout slide by the hole Donovan remained in control of his putter, lagging a downhill 40 footer to within a foot of the hole. He beat fellow Port member Eamon Sleigh in the putt-off.
On a brilliant autumn day on a magnificently prepared Port Kembla course around 100 starters did battle, with 13 points being enough to qualify for a putt-off and a place in the eight man shootout. Reg Gendron survived the 10 players for one spot, putt-off, only to bow out at the second shootout hole.
Port Kembla four-marker xxxxx shot on impressive 2-under 70, giving him 42 points and the best stableford score of the day.

Review: THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER
Scoring only 26 points on the day, John Sanderson was expecting to be a Shootout spectator. After the random draw gave him another chance a 4/1 on the first Shootout hole surely would be the end of his day. Not the case.
Things got better from there, with a birdie at Goulburn's par-five 18th giving Sanderson victory in the Goulbourn Shootout. His four at the last bettered Bob Wharton after a titanic struggle where both had dodge the bullet.
