THE TROPHY HEADS SOUTH |
| |
His golfing mates at Port Kembla golf club say Dave Medcalf talks a good game. After a sudden-death victory in the 2000 Australian Shootout Championship he can now back up the bravado with a national title.
In the three man Shootout to decide the Australian champion it was Medcalf who prevailed against former Cronulla member Phil Fahey and talented young professional Scott Gardiner.
Held in fading light on the 18th at The Royal Pines resort on the Gold Coast, a double bogey seven by Medcalf after visiting the water off the tee, matched a seven by Fahey and a six by Gardiner without a shot, sending the trio into a sudden-death putt-off.
Despite the smart money being on either the young professional or the best ten handicapper to ever come out of the Cronulla club, it was the South Coast native Medcalf who held his nerve, knocked his long putt inside those of his rivals and became the inaugural Australian Shootout Champion. |

THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE TOPPLED |
| |
Up against two golf professionals, Neville Allen was always going to be the underdog and therefore "the people's choice". This time however, it was no fairytale finish as Tweed Heads professional Scott Gardiner bested Allen and Woolooware's Brett Liprini to capture the Royal Pines Shootout.
The Shootout at the Gold Coast resort was also notable for producing the longest putt in Shootout history and for qualifying three women into the eight strong shootout field.
Fay Jones, Helen Stares and Cathy Parkes all survived the random draw to take their places in the shootout with Fay holing a 25 metre putt to stay alive (according to the organisers the longest putt holed in shootout history) at the first playoff hole.
In the final wash-up it was the talented Gardiner, destined to become one of Australia's most successful golf professionals, who outlasted Liprini and "the people's choice" Allen, to take out the Royal Pines event and qualify for the 3-man national final. |

AT HOME ON THE COAST |
| |
Now a Gold Coast "local", formerly a Cronulla Golf Club member, Phil Fahey used his new found local knowledge to win the Sanctuary Cove Shootout.
Held at the Palm's course at Sanctuary Cove, Fahey, now off an eight handicap at Arundel Hills, bettered Cronulla's Rod Barnes on the 18th green to capture the title. |

BIRDIES GALORE |
| |
He shot 65 at Lakelands to easily qualify for the Shootout, then birdied the first three play-off holes, but talented teenager Ewan Porter fell at the final hurdle, enabling David Metcalf to win the Queensland Shootout Championship.
After his earlier heroics Porter made bogey at the first extra hole to hand the title to his Port Kembla opponent. Medcalf also qualified for the National final later in the week, in which he subsequently emerged the winner.
In the putt-off for places in the final eight Brad Hawkins left no doubt as to who was closest to the pin, holing a 40 metre putt on the 13th green at Lakelands. |

A ROYAL VICTORY |
| |
It wasn't pretty, in fact a bogey six was good enough for Kogarah member Alan Whiting to capture the Canberra Shootout Championship.
Played at Royal Canberra and utilising the new 19th to 27th holes, which were recent additions to the famous layout, Whiting captured his championship beating xxxxxxxxx on the 27th green. |

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH |
| |
With Rob Elkington lining up a one-metre birdie putt it looked highly likely his famous surname was to be engraved on the Illawarra Shootout Championship trophy. But after his opponent, fellow Port Kembla member Paul Irish, holed his own five metre birdie putt, it certainly made Elkington's putt a tougher one.
And history shows it was Irish who had luck on his side, coupled with his own good management, taking out the title when Elkington missed his birdie effort to send the event into a putt-off. |

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY |
| |
It was a family affair with Jamie, Brett and Scott Arnold, sons of Cronulla resident professional Col Arnold, grabbing all the headlines at the Cronulla Shootout.
Oldest brother Jamie birdied the 9th hole in front of a huge gallery to beat fellow Cronulla member Chris Neil to win the shootout championship.
Only a short time before, younger brother Scott had hit his tee shot on the same hole to only a few inches from the hole, declaring to his brother Brett, "get inside of that one". Brett managed to do just that, holing his tee shot on the 140 metre hole for the first hole-in-one in shootout history. |

OUTLASTING THE COMPETITION |
| |
In what was developing into something of a golfing marathon, New South Wales Golf Club member Rick Abrahams needed two extra holes, then a putt-off before claiming victory in the inaugural Shootout .
In competition with Woolooware pennant player Greg Soames, Abrahams, after halving the 18th at Camden Lakeside twice, claimed the first NSW Shootout Championship in a putt-off. On the 18th green Abrahams calmly stroked his ball inside that of his more experienced opponent to take out the title. |
